The collision of three Norfolk Southern trains in Pennsylvania early this month highlights the shortcomings of the automated braking system that was created to prevent such crashes. Not only was the system incapable of stopping the second train before it smashed into the back of a stopped train, but it also couldn't stop the third train. Congress required railroads to develop the positive train control system after a deadly 2008 collision between a Metrolink commuter train and a Union Pacific freight train in Chatsworth, California. Norfolk Southern's safety practices have been in the spotlight since one of its trains derailed in East Palestine, Ohio, in February 2023. The report also didn't say whether there were any curves or hills that made it hard for the crew to see the stopped train.

That added to the massive debt burdens already placed on the hospitals by their for-profit owners, deepening their financial woes. In January, MPT reported that its biggest tenant, a nationwide chain of 32 hospitals called Steward, could no longer pay its rent. The core idea was simple: to buy hospital real estate, pocket the lease payments, and use the money to reward investors. The more hospital real estate that MPT buys, the more money it makes in rent payments from the hospitals. But that doesn't mean that MPT's leaders didn't get rich off its hospital deals.

Angela Sue Lucas booked a two-day getaway for her 40th birthday in July 2020 at Club DLuxx, an Airbnb run by Dennis Peter Weisse in North Fort Myers, Fla. Or, so she thought. “I refused her reservation,” said Mr. Weisse, 70, who was nicknamed DLuxx by a high school buddy. “I have other guests staying at Club DLuxx and it wouldn’t be fair.” The house is Mr. Weisse’s home, out of which he rents two rooms. The next day, Ms. Lucas, 43, who goes by Angie, set him straight. “I was excited about my birthday staycation,” replied Ms. Lucas, who was looking for a quiet solo escape in early pandemic times.

Over the course of several days, The Associated Press interviewed a cross section of voters in Northampton County to ask whether Biden's messaging around the fate of democracy was resonating. These voters represented parts of the very coalition Biden will need to win Pennsylvania again — Black voters, Latinos, independents and moderates from both parties. A Biden campaign spokesperson said the democracy message is central to the campaign but it is not the only one the campaign will use to reach voters. Getting Black voters engaged is going to take more from Biden, she believes, because so far his campaign messages have not resonated. But Lopez thinks messages of fear and Trump imperiling American democracy are essentially meaningless for many of the county's working class voters.

EMMAUS, Pennsylvania (AP) — President Joe Biden on Friday tried his hand at retail politics — stopping in a trio of Pennsylvania stores to stress the value of small businesses and talk up his economic record. Biden gladhanded and joshed at a running shoe store, bicycle shop and coffee house in Emmaus, Pennsylvania. “If you notice, they're feeling much better about how the economy is doing,” Biden said in response to a reporter's question. “It was cool for him to be able to see the small businesses that power our economy and the folks behind that,” Shapiro said. But as an American business leader condemning Hamas’s attacks, he said, he felt surprisingly lonely. “I was disappointed that fewer leaders than I anticipated spoke out emphatically, clearly and with moral clarity on this issue,” Mr. Karp said. Some business leaders made donations to humanitarian organizations and pointed their employees to company-sponsored mental health resources. “No company does business in Gaza — as opposed to, say, in Russia, where there are 1,500 major companies doing business,” he said, comparing this war with the Russian invasion of Ukraine. “The dynamics in the Middle East have always been difficult and complex,” he wrote.

Mack Trucks and UAW announced the tentative agreement early Monday, followed by releasing "highlights" of the deal later in the week to members. Neither UAW nor Mack Trucks have publicly released the tentative contract ahead of employee meetings to detail the agreement and voting this weekend. Previously, Democratic governors who had backed school choice measures had done so in compromise deals with Republican-controlled legislatures. Vouchers have long been viewed in stark partisan terms: Democrats and public school allies say they drain critical resources from public schools. Republicans and school choice advocates say they give freedom to families who may not like their local public schools. That had motivated public school advocates and Democrats to demand billions more for the poorest public schools, a quest that Shapiro has said he supports. Those fluent in the history of school vouchers could think of no other Democratic governor who had embraced them.

A few days before Biden’s speech in Maine, the Fed approved raising interest rates to their highest level in more than 22 years, continuing an aggressive inflation-busting campaign. Customers are also being pinched with higher interest rates,” a food, beverage and tobacco products manufacturer told the ISM in its August survey. “When we built our first building, interest rates were around 14% or so, and that was in the early ’80s,” she said. “We’ve seen some plans go on hold or on a slower burn until those companies see what happens with interest rates and the economy,” he said. Recession or not, the bull case for US manufacturing has the industry — and Biden — in a good mood.

Critics of the president’s economic approach were somewhat heartened by reports that Mr. Erdogan is expected this weekend to appoint Mehmet Simsek, a former finance minister and deputy prime minister, to the cabinet. Mr. Simsek is well thought of in financial circles and has previously supported a tighter monetary policy. Mr. Barkey argues that Mr. Erdogan will have no choice but to make a U-turn on policy by winter, when energy import costs rise and some debt payments are due. Others are more skeptical that Mr. Erdogan will back down from his insistence that high interest rates fuel inflation. To deal with the large external deficit and depleted central bank reserves, Mr. Erdogan has been relying on allies like Russia, Qatar and Saudi Arabia to help bolster its reserves by depositing dollars with the central bank or extending payment deadlines and discounts for imported goods like natural gas.

As part of an effort to handle and deliver more of its own packages, Amazon launched an air cargo business. Rhoads joined Amazon Air in its early days and has overseen much of the unit's growth, including the opening of a $1.5 billion air hub in Kentucky. Air cargo rates have plunged from record highs hit during late 2021, when port snarls and a dearth of international flights pinched capacity and drove up prices. But the materials are expensive and still face supply bottlenecks compared with the cheaper standard silicon used in most chips. The company has previously raised funding from semiconductor manufacturing equipment maker Applied Materials (AMAT.O). iDEAL has partnered with Bloomington, Minnesota-based chip manufacturer Polar Semiconductor to make its first chips and is planning to roll them out later this year. Granahan said silicon carbide chips can still beat iDEAL's for certain applications including the extremely high voltage chips needed for applications such as electric semi trucks. But he said iDEAL's chips could be competitive for about 90% of the overall market for power chips.

Prosecutors will spend an estimated 10 minutes reviewing each report to decide whether to use it in court, Mr. Vainio said. The logistics of a trial will be challenging because Finnish law requires courts to accommodate all victims who want to be present, Mr. Vainio said. Money, however, won’t address all the harms to victims, Mr. Vainio said.

Chatbots are bullshit engines built to say things with incontrovertible certainty and a complete lack of expertise. What is it that makes human beings trust a machine we know is untrustworthy? After millennia of debate, the world's leading philosophers, psychologists, and neuroscientists haven't even agreed on a mechanism for why people come to believe things, or what beliefs even are. We want Google results to be true, because we think of Google as a trusted arbiter, if not an authority. The power of storyAnother possible explanation of why we're suckers for chatbots is that we're suckers for explanation.
